We Are Co-ops: Golden Community Co-op and Being There for Your Community

For this week’s edition of “We Are Co-ops”, we are excited to feature our member Golden Community Social Services Co-op (Golden Community Co-op) and their new hire Lori Baxendale who was brought on to fill their newly created role as Community COVID-19 Response Coordinator. Our Co-op Champion Madelyn Read, connected with Golden Community Co-op to learn more about how they’re best serving their community during these difficult times and being there for them.

The Golden Community Co-op is a collaborative effort between four community-based organizations in Golden, BC including the Family Center, Women’s Resource Centre, Foodbank, and Community Resources Societies. With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Co-op realized the need for someone to support community members through navigating and understanding all of the new information and resources available to them. This sparked the creation of the Community COVID-19 Response Coordinator and hiring of Lori Baxendale. Her role is to provide support and guidance to community members and businesses who may need assistance accessing information and services. In an interview with The Golden Star Baxendale emphasized, “when people are feeling pressure and stress in their life and are having difficulty sorting through all the information, they can reach out to me for some hand-holding and support and I’ll help with navigating through this situation.” Since starting the position at the beginning of April, she has been busy researching and helping locals access the help that they need to make it through the pandemic.

Lori and Golden Community Co-op are here to help the community understand what’s available and/or applying for funds. They are currently available via phone, email, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger. Check out their COVID-19 page for contact details, hours, and useful local service links.
