| Announcements

The United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Cooperatives under the theme “Cooperatives Build a Better World.” This recognition highlights the power of cooperation to address the challenges we face as a society. This recognition couldn’t come at a more pivotal time. From climate action to economic inclusion, the cooperative model is uniquely positioned to provide solutions rooted in collaboration, shared values, and community empowerment.

Why the International Year of Cooperatives Matters

The UN’s focus celebrates co-ops’ role in advancing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, such as reducing inequality, alleviating poverty, and creating local jobs. In BC, co-ops are already leading the way. From credit unions that empower financial independence to worker co-ops championing equitable employment and housing co-ops addressing the housing crisis, the diversity of our movement reflects the values of equity, inclusion, and sustainability.

This isn’t just a celebration—it’s a call to action to spotlight co-ops’ contributions, deepen public understanding, and inspire participation in the cooperative movement.

Why 2025 Is Critical for BC Co-ops

The International Year of Cooperatives presents a unique opportunity for BC co-ops to amplify their impact, engage new audiences, and strengthen the sector. Here are four key ways 2025 will be pivotal for BC’s cooperative movement:

  • Raising Awareness: Co-ops often operate under the radar. This global recognition offers a platform to educate British Columbians on co-ops’ social and economic impact.
  • Engaging Youth: Young people face climate and economic uncertainties. Co-ops provide tools for meaningful change and a brighter future.
  • Strengthening Connections: The year encourages collaboration among BC co-ops, sharing ideas, and building resilience.
  • Advocating Policy Change: It’s a chance to push for government support for co-ops as vital players in addressing BC’s social, economic, and environmental challenges.

How BCCA Will Celebrate

BCCA is planning a year of education, action, and inspiration:

  • Awareness Campaigns: Events, workshops, and social media initiatives will showcase the co-op model across BC.
  • Co-op Connect Tradeshow (Feb 13): A virtual event to foster partnerships, highlight co-op products, and strengthen networks.
  • BC Co-op Tour: (March to October) A province-wide tour featuring workshops, film screenings, and networking to connect communities and highlight the co-op model.
  • Advocacy: Efforts to promote co-op recognition and support among all levels of government.
  • National Collaboration: Aligning with Canada’s co-op movement for shared learning and opportunities.
