The Cortes Island Shellfish Growers Co-operative was incorporated in 1998 after the local shellfish marketing company pulled their operations out of the community. Cortez Island shellfish growers were in desperate need of an alternative form of business management for their industry and with the support of the provincial government, shellfish growers organized themselves into a co-op to provide shellfish seed to local growers. The co-op has not only helped shellfish growers develop their marine industry, it has acted as a vehicle for idea sharing and research into developing more efficient technologies for growing shellfish. The co-op sells shellfish seed to its members at a 50 percent discount; members then cultivate their own tenures. The co-op provides advice and education for growers and above all, the co-op structure allows members to maintain control over local resources.
