2018 New Board Director Profiles

Elizabeth Lougheed Green

Liz has many years of experience as a community developer, social policy advocate and social enterprise practitioner. She is the Director of Community Investment for Vancity. The team of community economic development professionals provides critical strategic counsel to Vancity leadership about impact investing and inclusion. Prior to joining Vancity, Liz was the manager of strategic programs for Vancity Community Foundation (VCF), and earlier in her role as executive director, Liz led the Potluck Café Society from start-up through to sustainability. She holds a Multidisciplinary Masters in Policy and Practice, and serves on the CED Advisory of the Canadian Women’s Foundation, the Training and Education Advisory for Vancouver Foundation, and the Board of Corporate Knights.  In addition, she is a sessional instructor at BCIT, supporting professionals integrate an impact approach into their existing practice. She lives in East Vancouver with her husband and two children.

 

Karen McDonald

Karen McDonald recently joined Central 1 credit union as their Director, Government Relations – BC.  Karen’s experience with cooperatives includes seven years with Coast Capital Savings, in government relations, stakeholder relations and communications roles. Prior to her time at Coast Capital, Karen led communications and government relations for 2010 Legacies Now, and also led communications for two different ministries in the provincial government.

In her spare time, she is an instructor in the Faculty of Business with Kwantlen Polytechnic University as well as an avid cyclist, curler, runner and mom to her two dogs, Jasper and Ben.

 

Michelle Iverson

Michelle has over 15 years of experience working in the non-profit sector in the fields of governance, human resources and regulatory compliance.  She provides assistance in all areas of governance and corporate services for CHF BC and COHO Management Services Society.  She currently serves on the board of directors of WISHS Housing Co-op.

 

Ben Hyman

Ben Hyman is the former Managing Director of the BC Libraries Cooperative. Under the auspices of the Cooperative, the Sitka consortia – powered by the Evergreen open ILS – thrives. Sitka was the second production instance of Evergreen in the world when it began in December 2007. By the end of 2012, over 75% of British Columbia’s public libraries will be Sitka members, as well as a handful of post-secondary, special and extra-jurisdictional libraries. Before joining the Cooperative, Ben worked for several years with the Provincial Government on files relating to library policy, legislation, technology and funding. He has held positions in public, post secondary and government libraries in Western Canada.

 

John Kay

Since 2012, John has guided Realize Strategies to become a leader in impact-driven strategy and executive search. He values innovative approaches to finding solutions and supporting impact-driven businesses to succeed in their missions. Prior to joining Realize, John held several senior positions in the private and public sectors both in Canada and abroad, including as the Chief Operating Officer of the WE Group of Companies where he led a $50-million values-driven business, and Executive Director of Corporate Development at the BC Ministry of Advanced Education. He also previously Chaired the boards of Fairtrade Canada and the British Columbia Co-operative Association, where he now serves as Treasurer. From 2010-2013, John held the position of both Director and Chair of the Finance Committee for Fairtrade International based in Germany.

 

Zoe Creighton

Zoë Creighton currently works as an active co-op developer and organizational development consultant in the southeastern part of the province, and is the coordinator of the Nelson-based Upper Columbia Co-op Council, which incorporated in 2009 as a regional chapter of the BCCA. She has immersed herself in the co-op sector since spearheading the development of Kootenay Co-op Radio in 1997, where she worked as the first station manager, and continues to serve as its music director. Zoë has been on the BCCA Board since 2008, is chair of the Governance Committee, and keenly pursues synergies in co-op development and joint member services. When not engaged in co-operative activity, she spends her time in the backcountry – skiing, paddling, hiking and gazing into the wilderness.
