Building a Co-operative Economy
Social Co-ops & Social Care
The British Columbia Co-operative Association received funding
in 2005 from Western Economic Diversification and VanCity Savings
Credit Union to introduce social co-ops to BC communities as a model
for social care.
Social co-operatives use a member/owner model
of social enterprise to deliver health or social services designed and
delivered by caregivers and care recipients.
BCCA introduced the social co-op model through meetings with interested
groups and a series of community forums in the Lower Mainland,
Vancouver Island and the Southern Interior. The forums included
screening a BCCA-produced video entitled "Civilizing the Economy:
Social Co-ops and Social Care", presentations from emerging local
social co-ops and a dialogue session about potential applications of
the model in each region.
The Social Co-op project identified community resources and linked
communities to co-op developers and social co-op practitioners who can
provide ongoing information and technical support to new projects.
