The SFU Certificate Program for Community Economic Development, together with Heritage Credit Union, Kootenay Savings Credit Union and Nelson and District Credit Union, are pleased to announce a $6,000 Community Economic Development Bursary Program.
With equal contributions from the credit unions, the bursary program will provide up to six, $1,000 bursaries to emerging or mid-career community, social, economic, and/or business development practitioners in the Kootenay region. A key benefit to hosting the program regionally is the increased ability of the community to implement triple-bottom line solutions together. The program is for anyone who wants to expand their range of tools and models to successfully integrate social, environmental and economic concerns into community planning and development. Those best suited to the program are open to expand their horizons and accept the challenge of learning across disciplines and sectors.
Credit Unions are financial institutions owned by its members and an essential component to a sustainable, resilient economy. Community economic development combines economic and social activities to create:
- stabilized local economies
- long-term employment
- reduced stress on ecological systems
- community control and ownership
In order to be eligible for a bursary, applicants must:
ü Apply & be admitted to the SFU Certificate Program for Community Economic Development
ü Be making a positive contribution to their community.
ü Demonstrate financial need
To apply to the bursary program submit a letter addressed to The Bursary Review Committee by 4:00pm June 13, 2012 via email to email@example.com which includes:
ü Your background, experience and goals
ü A statement about your financial need
ü Two references
ü A 250-word composition that answers, “How can today’s leaders inspire the next generation who are concerned about jobs and sustainability in the Kootenays?”
If you have not yet been admitted to the SFU Certificate Program for Community Economic Development, you have to June 12 to apply, but are advised to apply as soon as possible. The application form and program brochure are attached.
